“There’s no reason why we should not get an agreement,” President Obama said at a surprise news conference Tuesday, later adding: “The only question is whether politics or ideology are going to get in the way of preventing a government shutdown.”

He was referring to the Republicans.

At a dueling news conference across town, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said, “we’re not going to allow the Senate and White House to force us to choose between two options that are bad for America, whether it’s a bad deal that fails to make real spending cuts, or accepting a government shutdown due to Senate inaction.”

The good news is that Democrats and Republicans say they will keep talking for as long as it takes to avoid a shutdown.

At the Capitol Hill news conference, Boehner said that a Democratic offer of $73 billion in budget cuts includes money that has never been approved by Congress, and that only $33 billion comes from existing programs. Boehner said, “we’re going to fight for the largest cuts possible , real cuts, not more smoke and mirrors.”

“We can still avoid a shutdown,” Boehner said, “but Democrats are going to need to get serious about cutting spending — and soon.”

Back at the White House, Obama and the Democrats said that $73 billion is $73 billion, and matches an initial budget proposed by Boehner and the Republicans.

“What they are now saying is, well, we’re not sure that every single one of the cuts that you’ve made are ones that we agree to,” Obama said. ” We’d rather have these cuts rather than that cut. That’s not the basis for shutting down the government.”

Obama said: “We should be able to come up with a compromise in which nobody gets 100 percent of what they want, but the American people get the peace of mind in knowing that folks here in Washington are actually thinking about them — because they’re going through a whole lot of struggles right now.”
